Tambach Track

On the surprisingly standardized training schedule that governs the rhythms of the running week in Iten, Tuesdays are for track workouts. The usual choice is Kamariny Stadium, which was opened by Queen Elizabeth herself in 1958 and has been where so many great runners have trained.

Kamariny Stadium is closed for renovations indefinitely, so its replacement is the track at Tambach Teachers College, mercifully at a lower altitude in the valley (Iten appears as an imposing cliff from Tambach). Tambach Teachers College was never intended to be a training facility for world-class athletes. It’s a tiny school on a quiet road in the Kerio Valley, a bit below Iten but still high above the Rift Valley. Its track is dirt, with cows grazing along the sides.
